Position: Summer Camp Director (Camp Waldo)
Organization: Appalachian Headwaters
Location: Hinton, West Virginia
Appalachian Headwaters is seeking an experienced camp administrator who has a passion for environmental education. This position offers the opportunity for an enterprising and self-motivated individual to help develop a summer camp from the ground up.
Headwaters is a nonprofit organization focused on the restoration of native ecosystems and sustainable economic development in central Appalachia. One of our programs is Camp Waldo, a residential summer camp offering outdoor environmental and arts education for students ages 8 to 12 from all economic, social, and cultural backgrounds. The purpose of this camp is to help children develop a greater appreciation of the natural environment and an understanding of environmental issues. Camp Waldo takes place at a recently renovated historic camp property on the Greenbrier River in Summers County, West Virginia.
The Camp Director will work with the Executive Director and other staff to create and run a summer camp program. Headwaters staff operated Camp Waldo for the first time this past summer as a single two-week session with approximately 80 children and 20 counselors. The new Camp Director will join our supportive team already in place as we expand and refine the program. The job will include working with year-round Headwaters staff in the off-season to create camp programming, improve existing facilities, design new camp buildings, recruit and hire summer staff, and market to prospective campers’ families, among other duties. During camp sessions, the Camp Director will manage all operations of the camp program, including supervising summer staff, planning the daily activities schedule, ensuring the wellbeing of campers, communicating with parents/guardians, and doing whatever else is needed to make sure the camp runs smoothly and safely.
We expect the program to include one week of staff training and approximately 3-4 weeks of camp from early June through July.
